Home Blood Pressure Monitoring — HBPM
A standardized series of blood pressure measurements performed at home with appropriate equipment and an instructed protocol to complement clinical assessment.

What it is
Home Blood Pressure Monitoring is a structured method for measuring blood pressure outside the medical office. Readings are taken at home according to a defined schedule and technique using appropriate equipment.
What it is for
It complements office readings and may help assess differences between settings, treatment response and overall blood pressure behavior.
How it works
After instruction, the patient takes readings on the defined days and times under standardized conditions. The set of results is reviewed; isolated values should not be interpreted out of context.
When it may be indicated
It may be used in the investigation or follow-up of hypertension, including suspected white-coat or masked hypertension and assessment of treatment control, when clinically indicated.
Important information
HBPM is not simply checking blood pressure from time to time. Reliable results depend on validated equipment, appropriate cuff size, correct technique and adherence to the protocol.
Frequently asked questions
Is HBPM the same as ambulatory blood pressure monitoring?+
No. HBPM is performed by the patient at home according to a protocol. Ambulatory monitoring uses an automatic device continuously over a defined period.
Can I use any blood pressure monitor?+
A validated device and appropriate cuff size are important. The care team can advise on equipment and technique.
Should I change medication after one high reading?+
Do not change medication based on a single reading without medical advice. Very high readings with significant symptoms require urgent assessment.
Individual assessment matters
This page is educational and does not replace an individual medical assessment. Tests, treatment and follow-up are defined according to the clinical context. For acute or emergency symptoms, seek urgent care.
